The Moth is true stories, told live and without notes. They celebrate the ability of true, personal storytelling to illuminate both the diversity and commonality of human experience. Their work allows people all over the world and from all walks of life–astronauts, students, a dental hygienist, a hotdog eating champion, a mechanic, exonerated prisoners, veterans, Nobel laureates and everyone in between–to share their stories on stage in front of a live audience. Through live shows, storytelling workshops, a podcast, Peabody Award-winning Radio Hour, and New York Times Best Selling books, The Moth brings the power of personal storytelling to millions of people each year—creating community and building empathy around the world.
What is The Moth Community Program?
The Moth partners with community organizations, small nonprofits, and cultural institutions to host workshops that inspire confidence and self-reflection in storytellers and listeners, deepening connections within and between communities. These experiences provide partners with the space, tools, and expertise to practice the art and craft of storytelling.
What can I expect from the Intensive Workshop?
The Moth Community Program will lead participants through a five-session Zoom workshop in April 2022. The workshop will consist of four interactive, instructional sessions (4/18, 4/20, 4/25, 4/27) and a final presentation of stories to an invite-only audience on Zoom (4/29).
The Intensive Workshop offers a deep dive into the art and craft of storytelling. Over the course of the workshop, participants explore Moth principles of personal narrative, reflect on life experiences through a series of prompts, identify one personal story they wish to tell, and craft a five-minute version of that story with the help of Moth instructors and in small groups. Each workshop opens with trust-building games to develop a supportive space.
What kind of story will I be telling? Do I need to know my story in advance?
Stories can be about anything, but they should come out of participants’ own personal experiences. Participants do not need to have their stories identified before the workshop begins. Brainstorming plays a big role in The Moth’s work, and many participants find their stories after the workshop has started.
How will the H-CAN Story Share Event work?
The H-CAN Story Share Event will take place in-person, outdoors at the Main Line Art Center in Haverford, PA, on May 1, 2022 from 3-5 PM. The event will give workshop participants the opportunity to share their stories with all members of the H-CAN community, as well as the broader public.
Is there a cost for participation?
No. Although participants are welcome to contribute to fundraising efforts to cover costs of the workshop and events, there is no cost for participating.
Will my story be recorded?
Yes. Stories will be recorded at the final Zoom share with The Moth and/or at the in-person event. Participants can opt out of having their stories recorded. Recorded stories will be shared with the public only with participant permission.
I am not an H-CAN member. Can I participate?
The Moth’s Community Program is partnering with H-CAN to offer this workshop to the H-CAN community. Participants must be H-CAN members or be recruited by an H-CAN action group.
What happens if I can't make all of the sessions and events?
Participants are required to commit to all six dates. Certainly we understand that unexpected situations occur, but due to the nature of the workshop and limited spaces, we expect participants to make every effort to attend.
Will a need for accommodations impact my ability to participate?
No, however we do need to know about accommodation needs with adequate time to prepare, so please include this information in your application.
